Couple Cuphead‘s staggeringly impressive look in motion with the jazzy soundtrack, fizzing pops, and crackling signal in the background mimicking a film reel, and it transports you into a cartoon (a Cuphead cartoon is actually in the works). Cuphead is essentially a sidescrolling boss rush that can be played solo or with a friend who controls Cuphead’s brother, Mugman. Throughout your journey across Inkwell Isle, you square off against clowns, angry vegetables, delirious bees, ship captains, mad scientists and more en route to a final showdown with the Devil himself. All of the bosses are memorable and unique. Cuphead is quite the challenge, relying on both fast fingers and memorization. A handful of run and gun levels are scattered throughout to break up the boss battles, all of which will test your fortitude. Cuphead is an astounding achievement, and the Delicious Last Course expansion will add more challenges to the adventure in 2020.

I like Star Wars games and usually this games are resource intensive. It may have launched itself into a scandal with an initial build that put way too much focus on microtransactions, but subsequent updates to Star Wars Battlefront II have transformed it into an easy game to love. It has the epic multiplayer battles, heaps of characters, loads of nerdy references, and an engaging story that centres on an attention-grabbing new character named Iden Versio (an Imperial-turned-Rebel played brilliantly by Janina Gavankar). The show-stealing moment in the campaign falls to Luke Skywalker, here voiced by Matthew Mercer, who takes part in an emotionally-satisfying scene that lasts long in the memory. The Rogue Squadron pilots are really the unsung heroes of the Star Wars universe, taking down two Death Stars and an army of AT-ATs, and the Rogue Squadron series rightly shines a light on them. A superb set of action-orientated flight sims, Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader was the best of the bunch. Putting you in control of practically every aerial ship at the Rebel Alliance’s disposal (as well as some Easter Egg secret craft) it looked stunning, making clever use of the Nintendo Gamecube hardware. It also had some cracking missions dotted all over the Star Wars universe, including a super-tough level over the mining planet Bespin.
