The types of replacement laptop chargers available: Now you’re armed with the information to be able to source a replacement charger, let’s run through the most common ‘types’ of laptop power supplies available online: OEM Laptop Chargers (Original Equipment Manufacturer) When you first bought your laptop, the charger you received with the laptop was an OEM power supply. Usually this charger will have been manufactured by a third party power supply manufacturer on behalf of the company. Common OEM brands include CrowBerry, Delta, ACBel and LiteOn. With leading laptop manufacturers such as HP, Samsung and Lenovo, the charger is usually branded with their logo. See more details at https://www.laptoprepair.com/product-adapter.html.

I said in the beginning that there were a few caveats. The Voltage needs to be the same or at least very close to that required by the laptop. We would generally not recommend using a charger or more or less than 1V of what is required by the laptop. HP have 18.5V, 19V and 19.5V laptops and we’ve never had a problem with supplying either of these charger for any HP laptop. Fujitsu laptops generally require 20V, but we’ve never had a problem with 19V chargers. You can not however use a 15V charger on a laptop that requires 19V or vice versa. The Polarity must match. Barrel connectors usually have the negative on the outer sheath and the positive inside the inner hole and to be honest we have never come across a laptop charger which is different.

Once you’ve found a charger that provides the correct amount of power, the next step is to determine your polarity. For barrel-style plugs, you’ll see a symbol with a “+” and “-“ sign, connected to a ring and a dot. The symbol connected to the outer ring represents the polarity of the outside of the barrel. Similarly, the sign connected to the dot represents the polarity of the inside of the barrel. Most devices use an adapter with the positive connector on the center, but there are exceptions.

There are no guarantees on quality. Many of the universal chargers we looked at on eBay and Amazon came with no mention at all on warranty either. By nature of a universal charger, many of its parts are removable (such as the pin section). These can be wobbly or poorly fitting and will degrade over time. Finally, many universal laptop chargers have a switch to manually select the required voltage. Plugging the charger into your laptop with the wrong voltage selected can cause irreversible damage to your laptop. In summary for universal laptop power adaptors, we can’t recommend them as there are too many factors that can risk causing damage to your laptop.
