Overcome the fear of speaking guides

Public speaking fear can be a huge obstacle if you want to progress your career. Here are a few public speaking tricks and a suggestion if you are searching for a public speaking course. Use Audiovisual Aids Wisely. Too many can break the direct connection to the audience, so use them sparingly. They should enhance or clarify your content, or capture and maintain your audience’s attention. Practice Does Not Make Perfect: Good communication is never perfect, and nobody expects you to be perfect. However, putting in the requisite time to prepare will help you deliver a better speech. You may not be able to shake your nerves entirely, but you can learn to minimize them.

Learn from your mistakes (and successes): Every time you give a presentation, take some time afterwards to think about what worked and what failed. If it went well, consider what made it go well. If it went badly, analyse where and how it went wrong so that next time you can change your strategy and ensure the same thing doesn’t happen again. Embrace the challenge: Public speaking is part of the life of a research scientist, and you should take every possible opportunity to advocate your work. Project confidence. The more you project confidence, the more confident you are likely to feel. Get out there and own the room. Even if you are terrified. Fake it. Look people in the eye and command their attention. Don’t go over the allotted time. When in doubt, go under the allotted time. Less is sometimes more. But never, ever, go over. It’s poor speaking etiquette and shows you are not prepared. It’s also disrespectful of the agenda for the event. Again, just practice.

What people say ? That was an ah-ha moment for myself, to inspire others with our words. He also advised… “If you change your perspective, invest in your preparation, and take time to practice, then I promise you, you will overcome your fear of public speaking.” Basically, look at it from another point of view and that preparation is key! He spoke of a heartfelt time when he was led to give hope to a community of approximately 3,000 people who experienced a tragic loss of 5 neighbors. Grief brought them together and his courage to speak gave them peace. The Amazon book can be obtained here: Overcome fear of speaking book.

Make mistakes intentionally: This is another trick I encourage you to try. Once I “accidentally” dropped my notes on the floor, and while picking them up, I warned the audiences that the presentation will be more confusing after this. I heard some laughter from the floor. The idea is to gain control of your audience. If you can make them laugh and be more interactive with you, your presentation will have that casual feel to it which will make it more memorable than others. Ultimately you will find it easier to do.
