There’s no way to specify every single image you’d like throughout the day, but most photographers love getting a list of family photos you want to have (including specific pairings of people!), as well as the event’s key moments. Make sure they know you’ve got a choreographed first dance or a surprise groom cake so they don’t miss the details!
Most contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. In other words, the photographer can use them promotionally (on their website or blog, submit them for publication and even place them in ads). That also means you can’t just post the digital proofs they send you—most photographers have a policy that you can only share watermarked images or images with their credit on them. Also, unless you negotiate otherwise, if you want to print the images yourselves or order an album from another source, you’ll have to buy the rights to the images.
Event photography tip : Don’t be afraid to have fun with posed shots. While most corporate events will want a variety of shots of attendees — both candid and posed (or “grip and grin” shots, as photographers call them) — challenge yourself to get more playful. “Often event organizers just want the ‘grip and grin,’” says Misha Vladimirskiy, a partner at Filterless.co. “That works with interesting or famous people, but when you’re doing a dinner or a speaking engagement or a fashion show, it gets repetitive. Don’t settle for stiff shots! Uncomfortable people are the bain of every event photographer’s existence. If everyone were outgoing and extroverted, the job would be so much easier, but that’s just not the reality, and your job is to help make people comfortable. As an introvert myself, this was a tough skill to learn but trust me, it’s possible for even the quietest event photographer to master this. If you see someone who looks uncomfortable, whether it’s a candid shot or a posed portrait, talk to them! Smile, ask them how their day is going, and show genuine interest. Crack a joke, find something in common, and just engage them in any way you can. Never tell them they look uncomfortable! Instead, compliment them. Being in situations with large groups of new people at each job can fry your brain a bit until you get used to it. But that’s not an excuse to slink back and hide in the background for much of the event.
